ACADEMY REPORT | BURTON ALBION 1-0 HUDDERSFIELD TOWN

12 January 2024

The Young Brewers started the new year with a win as they beat Huddersfield Town 1-0 as they look towards their big FA Youth Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur at the Pirelli on the 16th on January.

After coming on as a 76th minute substitute, Spencer Cook sealed all three points ten minutes from time in a tightly contested affair.

Albion started the brighter of the two sides and had numerous opportunities to open the scoring. Most notably on 20 minutes after Dylan Scott turned his man on half-way and drove into the box, however his shot was staight at goalkeeper Alex Walpole in the Huddersfield net.

The Brewers found themselves through on goal again just minutes later. This time Josh Taroni broke down the left-hand-side, the defender kept driving until his eventual shot was fired over the top of the crossbar.

The relentless pressure didn't stop there and as the ball dropped to Connor Pace in the middle of the park, the midfielder played a pinpoint pass through to Scott. Walpole came rushing out but Scott got to the ball first and took it round him, however the striker couldn't convert from a tight angle and the scores remained level.

After Albion's missed chances, the away side almost took the lead after Brewers goalkeeper Kamil Dudek gave the ball away off his line, the ball landed at the feet of Hazeem Bakre who's first time strike lobbed Dudek but also went over the crossbar.

The second half was a cagey affair with both sides trying to grap the game by the horns, chances came and went for Scott

The break-through finally came after 81 minutes, substitute Spencer Cook was sent through on goal by Connor Pace before slotting the ball past the keeper after being on the pitch for all of five minutes. 1-0.

The away side rallied in the final moments to create some presentable chances, however Dudek was equal to their efforts and the Brewers held onto their narrow lead.

The win sends the Young Brewers into their next fixture nicely as they play Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Youth Cup fourth round at the Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday 16th January.
