FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s home game against Cheltenham from Tony Bentley.

The only time that Burton Albion have played a Football League game on 20th January was in 2018 when they travelled to Fulham for a Championship game. It was an afternoon to forget for Nigel Clough’s side as promotion chasing Fulham simply blew them apart. Rui Fonte with a brace, plus goals from Lucas Piazon another brace from Ryan Sessegnon and one from Aboubakar Kamara earned a 6-0 win in front of 19,003 fans.

Saturday 20th January 2007 saw St Albans City visit the Pirelli Stadium for a Nationwide Conference fixture. It was a game where Lloyd Opara made his one and only Burton Albion appearance, and Aaron Webster scored the only goal of the game in the 45th minute on front of 1,632 fans.

The Brewers travelled to Weymouth on Saturday 20th January 2001 for a Southern League fixture. 1,005 fans saw Dale Anderson score the Burton goal in a 1-1 draw.

It was a Dr Martens Leaue Cup Second Round tie on Tuesday 20th January 1999 when Albion made the short trip to Atherstone United. A crowd of 191 saw Darren Stride score in a 1-1 draw.

It was an Eton Park FA Trophy First Round tie against Telford United on Saturday 20th January 1996 in front of 950 fans. Goals from Jason Rhodes, Martin Devaney and Karl Payne earned a 3-1 win over their higher league opponents.

The last time the Brewers hosted Charlton Athletic was on Saturday 22nd November 2022. Former Burton players Criag MacGillivray, Sam Lavelle, Scott Fraser and Charlie Kirk were all in the Charlton team that afternoon. MacGillivray only played that day after regular starting keeper Jojo Wollacott got injured during the warm-up. Charlie Kirk scored twice after 26 and 36 minutes, before Deji Oshilaja pulled a goal back for the Brewers in the 38th minute. Tom Hamer drew Albion level in the 45th minute, before Victor Adeboyejo put the Brewers ahead for the first time in the 58th minute. The points ended up being shared though, as Jesurun Rak-Sakyi equalised in the 75th minute in front of 3,084 fans.

The two sides previously met in Burton on Saturday 13th November 2021. 3,555 fans were in attendance as referee Trevor Kettle dismissed Deji Oshilaja and Jayden Stockley for a tangle before a corner in the 18th minute. When play did restart, Ben Purrington headed home the only goal of the game to earn all three points for the visitors.

It was Tuesday night game during the Covid-hit season when the sides met on 24th November 2020. Lucas Akins put Albion ahead in the ninth minute, before Joe Powell doubled the lead in the 39th minute. Paul Smyth pulled a goal back four minutes before half time, before Sam Hughes scored a third for Albion in the 53rd minute. Chuks Aneke got a second for Charlton in the 67th minute, before Charles Vernam scored a fourth for Jake Buxton’s side in the 76th minute, to complete only Buxton’s second win as a manager.

Nigel Clough was in charge of the Brewers when the two sides met on Tuesday 27th November 2018. A crowd of 2,438 saw Lucas Akins put Albion ahead from the penalty spot in the 25th minute. Karlan Grant levelled from the penalty spot in the 32nd minute. The Brewers bombarded the Charlton goal but couldn’t get a second goal, and ultimately lost the game when Jason Pearce scored a second for Lee Bowyer’s side in the 88th minute.
