FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s away game at Cambridge United from Tony Bentley.

The only previous occasion that the Brewers have played a Football League game on 27th January was in 2010 during their inaugural season in the league. Lincoln City were the visitors to the Pirelli as Cleveland Taylor volleyed home the only goal of the game after just 54 seconds, to complete a league double over the Imps in front of 2,109 fans.

There was another early Brewers goal when they travelled to Aldershot Town for a Nationwide Conference fixture on Saturday 27th January 2007. This time Daryl Clare netted a first minute opener, only to see it immediately cancelled out by Ryan Williams second minute penalty for the Shots. Andy Corbett restored Albion’s lead in the 14th minute, before John Grant made it 2-2 in the 37th minute. Williams netted his second and Aldershot’s third in the 78th minute to complete their 3-2 win in front of 1,970 fans.

Burton Albion hosted Bath City in the Southern League on Saturday 27th January 2001. A crowd of 1,376 saw Christian Moore score both Albion goals in a 2-2 draw.

It was a short trip to Atherstone United, also in the Southern League, on Tuesday 27th January 1998. A crowd of 346 saw Burton slump to a 3-0 defeat.

The Brewers travelled to Hampshire on Saturday 27th January 1993 to face Bashley in the Southern League. Albion’s Les Palmer scored the only goal of the game in front of 468 fans.

Burton Albion last travelled to Cambridge United on Saturday 27th August 2022, with current United striker Gassan Ahadme lining up for the Brewers. It was Ahadme who put Albion ahead after just 11 seconds, to record the fastest league goal the club has scored. After 10 minutes Albion were reduced to ten men when Jonny Smith was sent off for retaliation. Sam Smith equalised for United in the 34th minute, before John Brayford restored Burton’s lead in the 41st minute. Smith scored his own and his side’s second to equalise in the 53rd minute. Albion went ahead for the third time in the game when Ahadme got his second in the 67th minute. Smith made it 3-3 with his hat-trick goal in the 69th minute, before Liam O’Neil scored a 79th minute winner for Cambridge in front of 5,120 fans.

It was another August encounter the previous season - Saturday 21st August 2021. Cambridge took the lead in the 53rd minute when Sam Smith’s shot took a massive deflection off Conor Shaughnessy’s back to loop over Ben Garratt. The Brewers then scored the other two goals for Cambridge. Firstly, in the 73rd minute when Wes Hoolahan’s low cross went in off Tom Hamer’s shin. Then six minutes later, George Williams’ cross from the right cannoned off Hamer’s head to again beat Garratt to complete a 3-0 win in front of 4,468 fans.

Albion’s last victory at Cambridge came on Saturday 2nd May 2015 when they secured the League Two title. A crowd of 7,109 saw Stuart Beavon head Albion into a 10th minute lead. Tom Elliott equalised for Cambridge in the 25th minute, heading home a free kick. The Brewers were reduced to ten men in the 67th minute when John McLaughlin conceded a penalty and was dismissed. This allowed keeper Scott Shearer to make his one and only appearance for the Brewers. His first touch was to pick the ball out of the net from the resultant Robbie Simpson penalty. Albion made it 2-2 in the 77th minute when a short rolled free kick allowed Phil Edwards to advance and hit an unstoppable shot into the net from fully 25 yards. The ten men completed a remarkable victory in the 88th minute when Nassar El Khayati’s low cross was half stopped and Kevin Stewart was on hand to fire home from close range.
