FACTS and figures relating to tomorrow’s home game against Port Vale from Tony Bentley.


Burton Albion last played a Football League game on March 23 during the Covid hit 2020/21 season. Shrewsbury Town were the visitors to the Pirelli Stadium. Curtis Main gave the Shrews a 6th minute lead, before Harry Chapman doubled the advantage in the 56th minute. Sean Clare pulled a goal back on the hour mark, netting his only Albion goal. However, it was back-to-back 1-2 home defeats for Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, after MK Dons won by the same scoreline three days earlier.

Saturday, March 23, 2019 saw Accrington Stanley as the visitors for a League One encounter. Sean McConville gave Accrington a 37th minute lead. Former Albion striker Billy Kee doubled Stanley’s lead from the penalty spot in the 40th minute. It was vital that Albion scored the next goal to get back in the game, and they did just that Scott Fraser pulled one back in the 44th minute. Defender Kyle McFadzean equalised for Albion in the 68th minute. Lucas Akins put Burton ahead for the first time from the penalty spot in the 78th minute. David Templeton scored a fourth in the 82nd minute, before Akins scored a second penalty in the 90th minute to complete a remarkable turnaround and a 5-2 win in front of 2,916 fans. It was a momentous afternoon for Akins as he passed Billy Kee’s 39 goals to become the Brewers leading scorer in the Football League.

Accrington were again the opponents on March 23 2010, but this time Albion were on the road for a League Two fixture during their debut Football League season. A crowd of 1,220 saw goals from Shaun Harrad in the 27th minute and Greg Pearson in the 79th, earn a 2-0 win for Paul Peschisolido’s side.

It was Southern Premier League fixture in 1999 when Nigel Clough’s side travelled to Gloucester City. David Holmes scored the only goal of the game to earn all three points.

It was a trip to Essex on March 23 1996, when the Brewers earned a point from a goalless draw at Chelmsford City, in front of 755 fans.


Port Vale last visited the Pirelli Stadium for a League game on Saturday, August 20, 2022. A crowd of 3,744 saw second half goals from Ben Garrity in the 49th and Ellis Harrison in the 90th, complete a 2-0 win for the visitors.

It was another League One encounter on Saturday, October 24, 2015. This time a crowd of 4,076 saw Iche Ikpeazu dismissed in the 26th minute, after quickly picking up two yellow cards. The game was still goalless when Robbie Weir was sent off in the 80th minute to make it 10 a side. In the 84th minute Tom Naylor put Albion ahead, before Nasser El Khayati made it 2-0 in the 90th minute.

It was Tuesday night meeting on October 23 2012. New loan signing Jordan Chapell was introduced for his debut in the 70th minute, and instantly endeared himself to the home fans by scoring in the 73rd minute. However, this was quickly cancelled out two minutes later by Ben Williamson to earn a share of the points in front of 3,975 fans.

It was an early season Tuesday night game when the two sides met on August 16, 2011. Aaron Webster put Albion ahead in the 23rd minute, before Doug Loft earned a share of the points with a 60th minute equaliser, in front of 3,608 fans.

When the two sides met on Tuesday, November 2, 2010, the current Port Vale manager – Darren Moore – lined up in the heart of the Albion defence. A crowd of 4,027 saw the two sides play out a goalless draw.
