John returned to the Pirelli Stadium on August’s transfer deadline day in 2017, signing a two-year contract at the start of his third spell with the club.

John began his senior career with the Brewers having come through the Burton Albion Academy following his release from Manchester City as a youngster. John was the first graduate of the current youth system at Burton and went on to make over 100 appearances for the first team under current boss Nigel Clough. A subsequent move to Crewe Alexandra for a shot at the Football League followed. Two consistent years at Gresty Road, picking up the Player of the Year award in both seasons, led to a reunion with Clough at Derby County in 2010, where he also picked up the Player Of The Year Award in his first season at Pride Park. After three years with the Rams, Cardiff City paid a substantial fee to take John to South Wales and although he didn’t feature in the Bluebird’s Premier League campaign, he was a key figure upon their return to the Championship. John linked up with Clough for a third time, initially via a loan spell, at Sheffield United, leading to a permanent move to Bramall Lane in 2014. Injuries limited his opportunities towards the end of his spell with the Blades and John spent the 2016-17 season on loan with Burton Albion before penning a permanent deal after his release in the summer of 2017. In the summer of 2019, John signed a further one-year deal which would see him at the Pirelli Stadium until the end of the 2019-20 season.
