Stephen brought some invaluable experience to the Brewers backline when he penned a one-year deal with the club following his departure from Wigan Athletic at the end of last season.

Coming through the Liverpool academy Stephen made his senior bow during a loan spell with Bradford City and a further spell with Coventry City helped prepare him for a role in the Reds first team where he went on to make over 50 appearances for the Anfield club.

Blackburn Rovers paid £1.5m in January 2007 to take Stephen to Ewood Park and in a two and a half year spell made over 100 appearances. His consistent performances persuaded Aston Villa to sign him on a four year deal in August 2009 and another century of games followed along with a short spell on loan with Bolton before Leeds United snapped Stephen up at the end of January 2013.

Stephen became a regular again at Elland Road and was made captain during the 2014/15 campaign prior to being snapped up for an undisclosed fee by Derby County in January 2015.

After eighteen months at Pride Park Stephen was signed by Wigan Athletic after helping them to the League One title on loan at the DW Stadium. Last season saw him a regular back in the Championship and skipper for the Latics and following his release by Wigan following their relegation he was quickly snapped up by Nigel Clough to bolster Albion's defence.
