BREWERS AND BIRMINGHAM TO PLAY FOR THE BASS CHARITY VASE

1 July 2022

BURTON Albion and Birmingham City will play for the Bass Vase when they meet in a pre-season game at the Pirelli Stadium on Saturday, July 16 (kick off 2pm).

The Brewers are the holders of the Vase having beaten Leicester City in a penalty shoot-out after the game finished 0-0 last year.

Birmingham are one of the few Midlands clubs not to have featured frequently in the Bass Vase and have only won it once – in 1928.

A donation from the proceeds of this year’s game will enable the Bass Charity Vase committee to continue its support of local good causes.

Ben Robinson, Burton Albion Chairman, said: “We are delighted that Birmingham City have agreed to make our pre-season game this year’s Bass Charity Vase fixture.

“We know our fans always look forward to this traditional curtain raiser to the new season and I hope to see as many supporters as possible from both clubs helping us raise funds for good causes.

“The Bass Charity Vase has a long and proud history in Burton, and we want to ensure that legacy continues and thrives.”

Dave Mellor, President of the Bass Vase, said: “It’s great to see Birmingham City involved in the Bass Vase as well as Burton Albion who have been great supporters over the years.

“I want to thank both clubs for agreeing to play for the Bass Vase and Ben Robinson for his continuing support of everything we do.

“I’m sure we can all look forward to a great game that will help us generate much-needed funds to support good causes.”

The historic Bass Vase will be presented to the winners. There will also be an award for the Man of the Match – sponsored by Trent Trophies.

The Bass Charity Vase was founded in Burton in 1889. Its patrons were Lord Burton and Hamar Alfred Bass, who presented a magnificent, inscribed silver Rose Bowl (reputed to be one of the most valuable trophies in British football) to be held by the competition winners.

Many famous clubs and players have taken part since the competition started.

Other past winners include Aston Villa, Leicester City, Coventry City, Liverpool, Notts County, Nottingham Forest, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion.

The charity continues to support good causes every year.
