UNBEATEN RUN ENDS FOR U18s

30 January 2017

Oldham Athletic ended Burton Albion’s seven game unbeaten run in the Youth Alliance League, with Northern Ireland under 19s international Brendy Glackin proving to be the difference.

Jack Hallahan scored an early penalty to give the Brewers a third minute lead before Glackin provided Oldham with a late winner to complete a league double over Sam Rose’s side.

Rose was pleased with the way that his side performed against the Latics, despite the result.

“It is difficult saying it, because we ultimately lost an important game, but it was a good performance in terms of work rate and resilience. We showed purpose with the ball and defended well from set pieces,” Rose said.

“It was a crazy game. Both teams had a man sent off early in the first half and the majority of the game was played with ten men. There was lots of space as a result and the game was more open than either team would have liked. Both teams created lots of chances to score but Oldham had a match-winner in Brendy Glackin, I think he has scored 18 goals for them this season. He showed lots of energy and caused us problems all game with his direct running.

“We played some really good stuff, we had some younger lads in again, u16s and mainly first years and they stood up to the test, they defended with resilience and were fearless to play some good football under pressure from a strong, direct and physical side. Today we put out a young team and they showed that they have the making of a well-rounded group of players who are passionate and hardworking with potential, which bodes well for the future.”

The Brewers remain in second place in the Youth Alliance League, four points behind leaders Mansfield Town going into their next game, a trip to Rotherham United.
