YOUNG BREWERS BOW OUT OF SENIOR CUP

1 March 2017

A young Burton Albion side bowed out of the Birmingham Senior Cup this evening after losing 3-0 to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Albion’s squad which featured a number of academy players including some from the under 16s faced a tough Wolves outfit mainly made up of their Barclays Under 23 Premier Division side.

Recent recruits to the under 16s Daniel Cooke and Ethan Vale both featured, Cooke joined from Derby County and Vale from Stoke City. The rest of the line-up contained first-year scholars and first-team squad members in Ben Fox, Harry Campbell, Lee Williamson and Marcus Harness.

Wolves started brightly and should have took the lead after four minutes as Christian Herc hit a shot from ten yards wide of Harry Campbell’s goal.

The home side had another chance just three minutes later when Regan Upton headed over from an Aaron Collins free-kick.

Wolves early pressure paid off in the 10th minute as a devilish corner from Collins, found its way to striker Donovan Wilson who volleyed home powerfully from 12 yards.

Burton’s best chance in the first half fell to Will Miller who’s shot from the edge of the box was palmed by Jack Ruddy for a corner.

Wolves had the best of the first half and started strongly in the second. Wolves got their reward immediately and increased their advantage through Aaron Collins who slotted home powerfully after Albion tried to play it out the back.

Miller immediately responded up the other end for the Brewers but his shot was easily saved by Ruddy.

Collins was in the thick of the action again as his free-kick found the head of defender Regan Upton from six yards. Keeper Campbell did get a hand to the ball but the linesman deemed it over the line.

As the rain began to pour heavily, Wolves should have made it 4-0 as Duckens Nazon raced into the box following a ball from Herc but fired over the bar.

The game finished 3-0 and Wolves will now face Sutton Coldfield in the semi-final.
