SKIPPER EXTENDS BURTON ALBION CONTRACT

15 October 2015

BURTON Albion skipper John Mousinho has been rewarded for his consistency and high-performance level with a year extension on his contract.

Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink moved quickly to ensure the captain stays with the club by extending his contract to the end of the 2016/17 season.

Mousinho said: "It's good to go into the end of any season knowing you have another year, not only from  a security point of view in terms of injuries and getting a little older, but the fact that Burton are going places at the moment under this leadership - the manager, the chairman, everyone at the club is doing a fantastic job and it's a pleasure to be part of that.

"The Gaffer spoke to me fairly early in the season about getting the ball rolling and it's great to have that backing. I think that really helps in terms of your confidence, knowing you are really wanted as a player. It has been fantastic to have that and now to get the contract signed, done and dusted means we can just get on with he job and keep winning games.

"We had an unbelievable season last year, some of the best football I have been involved with personally and as a team as well. I had never won a league before. I had my suspicions we would be strong and do well this year so it was never a question of not signing once the offer started to be talked about it was just a case of getting it done."

Mousinho is also enjoying being the captain of this team

He says: "I would be the same regardless of whether I was captain or not. It brings a few more responsibilities with it, a couple on the pitch with the referee and a few things off the pitch, but we have a team where in the dressing room you can pick a number of players who would do a good job with the armband so we are blessed with having a strong squad of leaders.

Hasselbaink is delighted to have agreed the new deal with Mousinho.

The Gaffer says: “If I don’t start now with certain players I’m not doing my job well. He’s the captain and important and he’s done well. We are now talking to Robbie Weir and hopefully that will soon be done. Then others will come.”
