VAR TO BE TRIALLED AGAINST GILLINGHAM AS CITY SECOND LEG DATE FINALISED

8 January 2019

The dates for the Carabao Cup Semi-Final second legs have now been confirmed, with video assistant referees (VAR) set to feature in both fixtures.

Burton Albion will welcome Premier League champions Manchester City to the Pirelli Stadium on Wednesday 23 January, whilst the return leg between Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur will take place at Stamford Bridge on Thursday 24 January, with both fixtures due to get underway at 7.45pm.

The use of VAR comes as the EFL continues its commitment to support English football’s contribution to the live trial currently taking place, ahead of the technology being introduced into the Premier League from the start of the 2019/20 season.

A full non-live suitability test will be conducted during Burton Albion’s upcoming Sky Bet League One fixture against Gillingham on Saturday 12 January. It will be the first time VAR, as well as Goal Line Technology (GLT), will be used in the third tier in England.

Subject to a satisfactory test against Gillingham, Burton Albion and Chelsea will both feature VAR at their Carabao Cup Semi-Final home fixture, alongside the Final at Wembley on Sunday 24 February.

Confirmed Carabao Cup Semi-Final fixtures:

Tuesday 8 January - Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea - 8.00pm
Wednesday 9 January - Manchester City v Burton Albion - 7.45pm

Wednesday 23 January – Burton Albion v Manchester City – 7.45pm
Thursday 24 January – Chelsea v Tottenham Hotspur – 7.45pm
