REPORT & REACTION | WORCESTER CITY 1-1 BURTON ALBION

7 February 2023

MANAGER Tommy Booth hailed his side's "never-say-die" attitude as Burton Albion captain Amber-Leigh Denny converted a 90th-minute penalty to secure a point at Worcester City.

Denny showed nerves of steel as she stepped up to convert from 12 yards after full-back Sophie Richards was felled in the box late on by winger Holly Rogers, securing a share of the spoils after a competitive game at Claines Lane.

It had been a tight contest in Worcester, with the hosts taking the lead in the second half through Beth Dutton, who netted straight from a corner.

But the Brewers rallied late on and despite a handful of chances going off-target, Richards won the all-important spot kick allowing Denny the opportunity to secure a share of the spoils.

It was the second such instance of Denny securing a point with a stoppage time penalty, following a 1-1 draw at home to Sutton Coldfield Town in December.

"That attitude of not giving up, never-say-die, that’s definitely a massive positive," said Booth.

"It is something I wish we had a bit more of last year. I don’t think I can coach or teach that - but they’ve found it within themselves to show that resilience.

"I hate being on the sidelines in a game like that and not being part of it on the pitch. It was an interesting game - no-one carved open that many opportunities even though both teams played some nice, attacking football.

"It had a basketball feel, you attack, we attack, and we were a little bit wasteful in front of goal. They’re a good team but it’s maybe a bit of a missed opportunity for us. We lost 4-0 to them at the start of the season so that maybe shows how far we’ve come since then."

The Brewers return to action this weekend, taking on Shrewsbury Town at Montgomery Waters Meadow on Sunday February 12 (2pm kick-off) - before playing their highly-anticipated Birmingham Women's County Cup quarter-final on the main pitch at the Pirelli Stadium on Sunday February 19 (12.30pm).
